From the book:
The moderate methodology in the creed is the path of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah, as the way of the Salaf is balanced between the extremes of excess and negligence. Both extremes are blameworthy, and Ahlus- Sunnah occupies a middle ground regarding the matter of faith between the Waʿīdiyyah and the Murjiʾah. The Waʿīdiyyah—which includes the Khawārij and the Muʿtazilah—believe that the one who commits a major sin exits the fold of faith and will abide eternally in the Hellfire. However, they differ concerning the ruling of such a sinner in this world despite their agreement that the individual is removed from faith. The Khawārij asserts that the individual enters into disbelief, rendering their blood and wealth permissible to take. The Muʿtazilah, on the other hand, holds that such a person neither enters disbelief nor remains in faith but occupies an intermediate position and is classified as a sinner.
